Cam Hooks are used to smoothly make quick progress up cracks. The use of applied leverage transfers bodyweight into holding strength in the rock. Place protection pieces as if you are free climbing. Get past funky placements with clean “finger locks” of metal. Smoothed surfaces around webbing slows wear. Overbent hook with subtly hour-glassed tip locks into the rock. Patterned after Ed Leeper’s amazing design.
You can sling with 12mm supertape or 15mm tie-off webbing. If using the 12mm supertape it helps to cut the webbing with a 45 degree angle on the tip. This aids in feeding it through the hole to sling. If using 15mm tie-off webbing inspect the webbing frequently. It wears out fast. 15mm tie-off webbing gives you some versatility on how your sling is oriented.
Finish: Steel Cam Hooks come with a water displacing dry film oil applied. If a surface becomes rusty remove rust with fine abrasive pad (i.e. scotchbrite). Remove any moisture from surfaces before storage. Oil with a good water displacing product (WD-40 or equivalent). Aluminium Cam Hooks can become oxidised by prolonged exposure to the elements. To remove this simply polish with a scotchbrite pad and oil similair to steel cam hooks. Wipe excess off with a clean dry cloth. Store in a dry place.
Shape: Use a file to remove any burrs that have resulted from heavy use. Do not use a grinder or belt sander. This will undo the heat treating.
